What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of needles into the skin and underlying tissues in key 'points' for therapeutic or preventative purposes. The stimulation of certain "trigger points" - probably nerve fibres or receptors - with needles, is thought to induce rhythmic discharges that cause a release of endogenous opiods and oxytocin.

What does an Acupuncture assessment and treatment involve?

All our Acupuncturists only use very thin disposable needles so treatment is almost entirely free of discomfort. A visit will involve:

• a comprehensive case history which will include a detailed evaluation of your general health
• clinical evaluation
• explaining our findings and diagnosis to you and then having a discussion to decide an agreed treatment approach
• your concerns and welfare are, of course, paramount, so great care will be taken to ensure that the treatment experience is as pleasant as possible
• a small electrical stimulation of the needles or the burning of Moxa is sometimes used to enhance the effects of treatment
